NPELRA MENTOR PROGRAM

Mentoring Objectives       

To facilitate informal networks with seasoned Labor Relations and Human Resource professionals

To share insights, solutions and best practices across organizations

To broaden leadership/professional competencies in the labor/employee relations field

The experience will provide Mentee’s with:

  • Constructive dialogue and feedback with a seasoned Labor Relations professional
  • An advocate to discuss issues and formulate solutions
  • Enhanced personal and professional development

Mentoring Principles / Guidelines

Personal Experience – The mentor is an advocate for constructive change and positive growth.   

  • One year minimum commitment.
  • Mentor and Mentee are preferred to be within the same state, but not required.
  • Mentor generally has a minimum of 10 years experience in the Labor Relations and/or Human Resource profession.

Planned Sessions – must be planned to ensure sufficient amount of time is allocated for meaningful dialogue and activities.

  • Minimum availability of 2 hours per month.
  • Regular phone conversations or email exchange.

Active Participation – Active learning requires participation in direct dialogues and shared activities to promote Mentees personal and professional development.

  • Attend national/state PELRA training sessions or other professional trainings.
  • Volunteer for NPELRA or state PELRA committees.

How will seasoned professional Mentors be recruited?

NPELRA will encourage experienced Labor Relations and Human Resources professionals to participate in the program through written communications and at NPELRA & state PELRA events.

Procedure for Mentors:

  • Complete the Mentor Interest form and email to the NPELRA office.
  • The NPELRA office will validate the Mentor’s qualifications and when approved, add them to the Mentor listing on the website.
  • The NPELRA office will send out the updated list to potential Mentees.
  • Each Mentor will generally be assigned only one Mentee.
  • The NPELRA office will notify the Mentor upon selection by a Mentee to begin the program.

Procedure for Mentees:

  • Complete the Mentee Request form and email to the NPELRA office.
  • The NPELRA office will send the available Mentor list to the Mentee.
  • The Mentee will review the list of available Mentors & send in their top 3 preferences in order.
  • The NPELRA office will notify the Mentee which Mentor was matched with their contact information.
